CHAPTER TWELVE
John walked down the hall to Winnieâs bedchamber. He wasnât tiptoeing exactly, but he wasnât being blatant about his destination either. Heâd had sufficient whiskey that his common sense was tamped down, but not so much that heâd behave recklessly once he arrived.
He hadnât spoken to her in three days. Not since their spat in his office.
He wasnât a man who allowed himself to be lectured, and he never argued with women. In that, he was very old-fashioned. He believed a female should know her place and stay in it.
Her fit of pique over Bobby had been ridiculous. Sheâd complained as if John had mistreated Bobby, but John had recognized every stellar trait and had rewarded him for them. The boy had no prospects and nowhere to go, and John had saved him. Heâd saved Jane too.
When Winnie had traveled across England with them, sheâd been anxious as to what she could expect from John, but heâd provided them with everything Winnie had been praying he would bestow.
But was she grateful? Was she happy about it?
No, she was not!
Initially after their fight, heâd decided, to Hell with her!
Heâd been fascinated by her, so heâd allowed an attachment to form, but he shouldnât have grown fixated. It was insane to obsess, insane to moon over her like a smitten swain.
For three tedious days, heâd avoided her. Heâd worked hard, had focused on his many tasks, stridently ensuring he was never in a spot where he might bump into her.
And heâd been so miserable! So enough was enough!
He didnât knock on her door because he wouldnât supply her with a chance to deny him entrance. He simply barged in.
A candle burned on the dresser, so he could clearly see her. She was ready for bed, wearing a nightgown and naught else. It was a summery garment, with no sleeves and tiny straps holding it up, so her arms and much of her bosom were bare. Her beautiful blond hair was down and brushed out.
âHello, Winnie.â
âGet out.â
âNo.â
He spun the key in the lock and stuck it in his pocket, so no one could come in or go out until he was finished with her. He had no idea what his mission was to be, but that fact would not discourage him. He would blunder forward and let Fate determine the ending.
âI donât like the look in your eye,â she said.
âI donât care.â
âYou havenât glanced in my direction since our quarrel, and you have the gall to bluster in? What is wrong with you?â
âYou are wrong with me. I was perfectly fine before you showed up at Dunworthy.â
âYouâre being completely absurd. As usual.â
âItâs been a whole week since you cleaned my office, and itâs become messy.â
âItâs eleven oâclock at night. Youâre here to scold me about your office?â
âThatâand other things.â
âIf youâre irked by the situation, why donât you discuss it with your precious relatives? Iâm certain theyâll jump to correct any problems.â
He shook a finger at her. âYou havenât commenced a single new project either.
